Protecting Your Interests in Contracts c

Any time you sign a contract, your hope is to simply file it away never to be seen again. And if everyone performs his or her duties under the contract, then it never becomes an issue. However, if something goes awry, it is important to make sure that the terms of the contract clearly protect your interests. It is at that time that you will wish you had taken the time to properly include the protection you will need. I will address all those concerns on the front end as we prepare a contract that will protect you.

20+ Years of Experience Drafting, Reviewing and Negotiating Contracts

At my Houston office, I,  Michael L. Holland, Attorney at Law, have more than 20 years of experience helping people review, draft and negotiate contracts. There are many types of contracts including but not limited to employment contracts, lease agreements, buy/sell agreements, prenuptial agreements, partnership agreements, purchase agreements, installment agreements, promissory notes, warranty deeds, just to name a few.

If you need to make a written agreement about anything, call 713-893-1800 or contact me online to ask a question or schedule a free initial consultation.

Looking Ahead Now to Prevent Problems Down the Road

There is no simple form that you can fill out to protect your interests under all contingencies. As your lawyer, my job is to imagine all possibilities and outline how those situations will be handled in the event one of the parties to the contract fails to perform. Here are just a few examples of the type of things that must be considered:

  • In reviewing an employment contract, I will make sure that the definition of "just cause" for terminating your position is clearly defined and not just left up to whatever the employer wants it to be at the time.
  • In drafting a construction contract, I will plainly explain the payment terms and consequences for non-payment, including provisions for curing defaults.
  • In a landlord-tenant lease, I will ensure that the landlord and tenant's obligations are explained in plain English so there cannot be any confusion.

The provisions of your contract are only limited by imagination and experience and the other party's willingness to reach an agreement. I will work with you to contemplate everything that might happen and include explicit terms about how those situations will be handled.

Understand Every Contract You Sign

People sign contract agreements about everything you can imagine without understanding all of the provisions. Employment agreements, landlord tenant leases, real estate contracts, trusts - contracts are necessary any time two people want to make an agreement in writing. It is extremely important for you to completely understand what you are signing and how it will affect you.

I will help you understand exactly what you are signing and the consequences. You always want to make sure that the contract clearly outlines each party's obligations, rights and penalties for default.

Reasonable Fees

It is not as expensive as you may think to have an experienced attorney review or draft and negotiate your contracts. I encourage you to call 713-893-1800 or contact me online.

If you have a simple question, I am happy to answer it free of charge. If your situation is more complicated, we will schedule a free initial consultation in my office so that I can better understand your legal needs in order to design a plan to resolve your issue.
